The Most Reverend Michael J. Sis, sixth Bishop of San Angelo, will begin his public service to the people of the diocese this weekend with the celebration of two Masses.
At 5 p.m., Saturday, February 1, 2014, Bishop Sis will celebrate his first Sunday liturgy at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 19 S. Oakes in San Angelo. The Mass will be preceded by a brief opening ritual, common in the Catholic faith when new bishops begin their apostolate. When Bishop Sis arrives at the Cathedral Saturday, he will be greeted at the door by the rector, Msgr. Maurice Voity. The Bishop will be presented with a crucifix that he will kiss, then he will enter the building sprinkling the people with holy water. It is a brief and simple ceremony demonstrating that the Bishop has come for his first liturgy at his cathedral.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, February 2, Bishop Sis will serve as the main celebrant at the Silver Jubilee of the founding of Our Lady of Grace Monastery, 6202 County Road 339 Via Maria. The monastery is home to a small community of cloistered Carmelite nuns and is located southeast of Christoval.
