On Wednesday, February 17, Pope Francis will visit Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, across the international border from El Paso. A Mass, expected to draw 220,000, will be held in a city park in Juarez just a few hundred feet south of the Rio Grande.
This will be the closest a pope has come to our diocese since St. Pope John Paul II's visit to San Antonio in 1987.
The Diocese of El Paso will help celebrate the Holy Father's visit by helping host a Papal Telecast event at Sun Bowl Stadium on February 17, with this schedule:
12:00 PM - Gates to Sun Bowl Stadium open
1:30 PM - Bilingual music and entertainment program begins
4:00 PM - Telecast of Papal Mass in Juarez begins
6:00 PM - Event concludes
The event in El Paso will help allow guests to be united in faith and energized in spirit by His Holiness's message of hope in this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. It will also be a tremendous opportunity for the community of the faithful to experience together the excitement of Pope Francis's proximity to the border.
