2023 is the first full year without Roe v Wade but thousands of precious babies are still being killed by abortion. The abortion lobby is spending many millions of dollars, including your taxpayer dollars, on a comprehensive strategy to expand abortion even more this year.
National Celebrate Catholic Schools Week is Jan. 30-Feb. 4, 2023. I am very proud of our four Catholic schools in the Diocese of San Angelo: Angelo Catholic School in San Angelo, St. Mary’s Central Catholic School in Odessa, St. Ann’s Catholic School in Midland, and Holy Cross Catholic High School in Midland-Odessa.
The Legion of Mary prayed the rosary inside the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart Jan. 23, while Bishop Michael Sis, Deacon Erick Morgado, and an honor guard of the Knights of Columbus led faithful bundled against the cold wind in an outdoor rosary procession in downtown San Angelo. The prayers and procession, offered on the historic date of the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion nationwide, was preamble to the diocesan Mass for Life celebrated by Bishop Sis in the cathedral.
On January 22, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the pastoral letter Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope. This landmark document, issued jointly by the bishops of the United States and Mexico, addressed the need to manage migration between the two countries more humanely and emphasized the importance of providing pastoral care to newcomers. The letter also underscored a part of the Church’s identity that is frequently affirmed by Pope Francis: we are a Church that transcends borders, in which nobody is seen as disposable and all are welcome.

When visitors come to a Catholic Mass for the first time, they are typically struck by the number of times the Catholic participants change their posture (sit, stand, sit, stand, kneel, stand, kneel, stand, etc.). They are sometimes confused by our various gestures (bowing, signing ourselves, shaking hands as a sign of peace, and processing to the altar). Sometimes they jokingly refer to all this as “Catholic calisthenics.”
